چکیده

Tree reproductive structures-pollen and seed cones, or microand mega sporangia-represent an extremely rich source of food for many animals (166). Although some species exploit pollen cones (189), in this review we deal exclusively with those exploiting seed cones prior to seed dispersal. Insects are considered the most important seed predators during the predispersal phase of seed development (59). Previous reviews have exam ined insect predation on angiosperm seeds and fruits, insect-seed interactions, as well as insect ecology, evolution, and interactions with other animals (86, 166). No general overview of the insects exploiting seed cones of

Evolution of Specialization in Insect-Umbellifer Associations

The plant family Umbelliferae (Apiaceae) consists of almost 3000 species worldwide (112). Members of the family occupy a wide variety of habitats, including deserts, basaltic bluffs, salt and freshwater marshes, chaparral, forests, waste places, and subalpine tundra. Despite the ecological diversity, however, family members display remarkable morphological conservatism. The integrity of the fam...

Morphological and Anatomical Studies of the Ovary Galls of Sesamum indicum l. Induced by the Gall Midge, Asphondylia sesami Felt

The organization of gall on the ovary ofSesamum indicum L induced by the gall midge, Asphondylia sesami Felt, not only affects biochemical equilibrium of the host but also causes disturbed vegetative growth and reduced seed-setting. The toxicity created by the gall maker induces the re-orientation of vasculature Cecidogenetic stimuli lead to excessive hypertrophy and hyperplasy forming the gall...

Response of plant-insect associations to paleocene-eocene warming

The diversity of modern herbivorous insects and their pressure on plant hosts generally increase with decreasing latitude. These observations imply that the diversity and intensity of herbivory should increase with rising temperatures at constant latitude. Insect damage on fossil leaves found in southwestern Wyoming, from the late Paleocene-early Eocene global warming interval, demonstrates thi...

The Native Hawaiian Insect Microbiome Initiative: A Critical Perspective for Hawaiian Insect Evolution

Insects associate with a diversity of microbes that can shape host ecology and diversity by providing essential biological and adaptive services. For most insect groups, the evolutionary implications of host-microbe interactions remain poorly understood. Geographically discrete areas with high biodiversity offer powerful, simplified model systems to better understand insect-microbe interactions...

Variable Chemistry and Herbivory of Ponderosa Pine Cones

We measured the terpenoid chemistry, cone insect distribution, and the relationship between these two parameters in the seed cones of ponderosa pine. Analyses of mono-, sesqui-, and diterpenes from four separate sites revealed high amounts of terpenoid diversity and variation. The majority of this variation occurred among trees within sites, but differences were also seen among sites and among ...
